Something More Important for Now

I had planned on posting something completely different today but obviously our family is not the only one hitting the difficult side of reality head on. Our dear friends in Texas are facing an almost certain crisis once again. My gut tells me that all of us together can somehow either fix the situation or at least help.

You can read as much about Kyla's daughter at her blog to gain more background on their situation but the bottom line is this: Kaytar has many similar problems as Ben and they are about to lose her health insurance. As parents of our own exceptional child that idea is completely unfathomable to us. In fact losing the ability to not only provide therapy for this child but also basic nutrition is a condemnation for this child to never reach her full potential. This cannot happen on our watch. Not here. Not now. Not in what is supposed to be the greatest country on Earth.

I'm going to ask each of you to brainstorm as much as possible. Share ideas with each other, with me, with Kyla. Can we set up some sort of fund to raise money so that the Heberts can purchase Pediasure for Kaytar until they are once again insured? Please, I'm begging. They are exhausted. This is a battle they have had to wage for too long now. Let us help them somehow!

Idea Update: anybody have experience with setting up a non-profit organization? E-mail me at benwaddell@bellsouth.net.

You're the best.

We'll be okay for a while, but if anyone knows of any programs in Texas that are super secret and might help us out, we'd LOVE that info. I know some services are kind of hidden and you can't find them unless you know they exist.

This may be a solution that has already been explored, but what about getting a promise from a bunch of active bloggers (count me in)that they will post positive information to their sites and to Twitter (call it the reverse Motrin effect) about Abbott Laboratories in exchange for Pedia sure for Kaytar. Abbott will get a bunch of great, free publicity and this little girl gets the nutrition she needs.

I would be more than happy to blog and Tweet for the Pediasure! As a mom to 4 kids with no health insurance, my husband having the threat of a lay off over him, and my work load being cut in half since March, I can feel their pain. Thankfully, knock on wood, our kids have no chronic health problems, but it is a sad state that children can't get the care they deserve, and I'm willing to help do what I can!

Oh Michelle, I am so sorry! You tell me what I can do to help you! I'm definitely gonna include you as a Pediasure blogger if they go for it.

While I'm at it, I should probably consider learning how to spell Pediasure the right way. Just a thought.

Michelle, I too feel your pain. I am lucky in the my children are healthy, happy and strong, but I have been looking for work since before the beginning of the year. Hubby's company just went through a round of deep cuts yesterday, and thankfully he did not get the ax. The good news is that all this free time has allowed me to develop my little blog into something, still little, but a little bigger.

You folks are breaking my heart! I am really at a loss for words. I told Joan earlier tonight how several people who are hurting like us are trying so hard to reach out and help someone else. I just watched something a friend posted on Facebook that made me just want to say this (and I'll repeat it tomorrow): I love all of you!

Ben, I am quite frankly psyched by the opportunity to put my time and energy to use for a worthy cause. It would be an honor to be a part of something that brought some measure of relief to someone in the middle of this horrible economy. For those of us who can't really do much more to help ourselves, it feels so much better to be helping someone else. Thanks for lighting the flame. Hand it off, and I will do my little part to make it a blazing bonfire!

I just found your blog via Maggie's, and I'm so stunned at everything you've gone through in the past few weeks that I can barely breath.

I just blogged about health insurance yesterday, because I am blown away by how much ours does not cover and how unrealistic it is that this country does not consider affordable healthcare the right of every citizen.

Please count me among those happy to help with Abbott/PediaSure. I was also thinking Target might be a great company to contact, since they stock PediaSure and other Abbott products and are well-known for their philanthropic corporate spirit.

Keep it going folks! All of you rock our world.

Where can we send a donation? I will put it in the mail today.

Keep checking back. We're kind of in a holding pattern at the moment because Kyla is working with an advocate today on paperwork. We have fingers crossed that they may have found a loophole.

wow. i would imagine if she or someone contacted pediasure and explained the details they would give them their pediasure. every company has a dept. that gives their medicines/products away to families in need. especially medicines. it's out there-people just dont ask.
and they can also call their pediatrician. doctors offices are given medicines/nutrition supplements all the time to the point it at times will expire in a closet.
